Flag Raising Ceremony in honor of Veterans Day

Today, our entire OFRS community participated in a Flag Raising Ceremony in honor of Veterans Day. Local Veterans from the “Post 1776” of Washington Township were honored at the ceremony. The staff put together a lovely breakfast and students sang, recited poems and presented the Veterans with handmade cards. Fifth grade scouts assisted the Veterans as they raised the flag to the trumpet rendition of “Raise the Colors”. Following our ceremony, the Vets joined our 5th graders for a more intimate gathering and the opportunity for questions and conversation.

As a school, we feel it is important that students understand our country’s rich history and show their patriotism and respect on Veterans Day. What a special moment to see our elementary students shake the hands of the people who have selflessly served our country so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have as American citizens.

Thank you to our Long Valley community for joining us to commemorate this special occasion including members of the Board of Education, Administration, the local Police Department and Mayor. A very special thank you to Commander Thomas McBride of Post “1776” American Veterans Association of Washington Twp. for the wonderful and positive impact they had on our student body by sharing their time and stories with us today.
