English as a Second Language
Washington Township Schools delivers an English as a Second Language program at each of the four district schools. The team of certified ESL teachers facilitates learning for our English learners through effective, research-based practices. They are dedicated to helping students to develop their language skills for both social and academic settings. The teachers collaborate to deliver the English language learning curriculum while weaving in the content area curricula so each student can grow both in general knowledge and skills along with proficiency in the English language. They work closely with all professionals who have a stake in each ESL student’s education through a combination of small-group as well as co-teaching models of instruction. We believe in building on the funds of knowledge each student brings with them to our school, capitalizing on the richness of existing language to build new language, and inviting and welcoming all children to our community of learners.
The ESL team would like to invite parents of English Learner students to join the parent information and input meetings that will be held this year. There is no formal membership for the committee but all parents are welcome to attend, give their ideas, and learn about our program. Please look for communications inviting you to participate in one or more of the meetings this year. Parents are welcome to contact their child’s ESL teacher at any time to ask for more information, share ideas, and ask questions.
Our first open house for parents will be held on TBA. All parents of English Learners are welcome to attend.

Long Valley Middle School
I am a resident of Long Valley with three children in the district. My educational background includes a BFA (Temple University) and a MBA (University of Phoenix). Additionally, I hold certifications in English as a Second Language (Seton Hall University) and Elementary Education K-6. I have been in education for four years in the roles of Paraprofessional, Preschool and Elementary Aide, Substitute Teacher and Dance Instructor. Previously, I spent 10 years as a Project Manager in the field of medical education.
My primary focus is the development and inclusion students with unique backgrounds and challenges. I am looking forward to helping your children grow and achieve.
Old Farmers Road School and Long Valley Middle School
I am now in my fourth year here in Washington Township. I have been at Old Farmers Road School for the past four years and Long Valley Middle School for the past three. I received my Masters in Teaching and ESL certification through Fairleigh Dickinson University. While ESL is my passion, I am also certified in K-6 General Education and Secondary Social Studies. I am passionate about facilitating language learning through authentic experiences that are developmentally appropriate for the child. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the ESL students in the district!
Benedict A. Cucinella School
I am in my seventh year teaching ESL. Before coming to Long Valley I was a classroom teacher in all grades Preschool through eighth grade. I currently hold certifications in Elementary Education, Preschool, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Teachers of Students with Disabilities and English as a Second Language. I recently finished my masters degree at Centenary and will soon have my Reading Specialist and Supervisor certification.
As a Washington Township teacher for seventeen years, I’ve gained a wide scope in all areas of diverse teaching methods and learning. Having been a second and fifth grade classroom teacher and a Literacy Instructor at Flocktown-Kossmann, my experience in all the grades and across disciplines has made this transition to wanting to also teach ESL an easy one. Given my experience as a Literacy Instructor, and a love for language and learning styles, English as a Second Language learners have continuously reignited my passion for teaching the English language. I hold an English Literature Bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University, a Master’s of Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Literacy from Purdue Global, and other additional Graduate level coursework credits in the various areas of literacy and teaching. I am currently attending Centenary University in order to pursue the Standard Certification in ESL. I have found that much of what I do as a Literacy Instructor directly correlates and connects to the intervention-style instruction of ESL, which I provide within the MTSS (Multi-tiered system of support) here in WT schools. At home, I am a mother of two daughters, 8 and 11, and enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, making art, reading. And, though having been to most every state in the country, look for any opportunity to travel and plan on seeing the world someday!
