The Long
Valley Middle
School has an enrollment of approximately 1050
students in grades 6 – 8 and eighty seven professional staff. A concerted
effort is made to ensure that the school is a caring and sensitive place for
pre-adolescents to grow and learn. The
Long Valley
Middle School is
committed to providing the best possible intellectual and emotional support
necessary to ensure academic success and to provide a smooth transition through
preadolescence.
The foundation of our academic program includes
courses in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, world language
and a program of comprehensive health and physical education. Students are also
required to take courses supporting the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content
Standards in the areas of art and music. In addition, students may select to
participate in exploratory courses offered in the areas of industrial
technology, consumer education, nutrition, chorus, and musical keyboarding.
Since evaluation is an essential and on-going part of
all successful school educational programs, the teaching staff routinely uses a
variety of assessment techniques. Besides teacher-designed assessments, other
evaluation instruments include district tests, the NJ ASK achievement tests
administered to students in grades 6,7 & 8.
The Long
Valley Middle
School is organized using six interdisciplinary teams serving approximately 120
students in grades 7 and 8 and
five interdisciplinary teams with approximately 75 students in grade 6. This
organizational structure supports communication among teachers, parents, and
students as they go through the transition from a self-contained elementary
classroom to the departmentalized high school program. The middle school is
designed specifically for the pre-adolescent youngsters it serves. The
educators at the Long
Valley Middle
School place an emphasis on high academic
standards while providing the emotional support critical to success during the
middle school years. This unique combination of scholastic rigor and emotional
support is the hallmark of our school.
Our
middle school PTA takes a very active role within our school. Through their
efforts, parents are afforded the opportunity to volunteer for numerous
activities such as: fund-raising, book fairs, tutoring programs, field trip
chaperones, lab assistants, and other activities.
In addition to the academic challenges, the Long
Valley
Middle School promotes
student involvement in interscholastic sports, clubs, and activity programs.
Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities to maintain
overall health and optimal growth. The school continues to support a major
anti-violence and bullying reduction program known as V-Free. As part of this
initiative, students were encouraged to participate in a variety of efforts
designed to establish a school environment that allows students to be free from
violence, vandalism, bullying, and victimization.
